Diagnostic Laboratory

BUSINESS PROBLEM:

A full-service Diagnostic Laboratory preparing to cease operations approached Scalesology for assistance in determining and developing the best approach to access the lab’s billing and patient data, as well as reports, for future inquiries after their existing system was shut down. Additionally, the lab sought consulting services to ensure the secure migration of systems and data to a HIPAA-compliant cloud provider.


SCALESOLOGY IN ACTION:

Given the constraints faced by the client, Scalesology implemented the following solutions to ensure continued access to patient data:


  1. Database Replication and Migration: The laboratory and billing system database was replicated and securely migrated to ensure long-term accessibility.


  2. User-Friendly Web Application: A web application was developed to provide efficient search capabilities for billing and patient information, as well as the ability to generate detailed reports, such as Accounts Receivable reports. In the absence of reference documentation, Scalesology conducted an in-depth analysis of the database to identify inter-table relationships. Advanced SQL queries were used to replicate complex billing and patient reports. These views were subsequently transformed into optimized tables, with enhancements such as indexing, significantly improving performance.


  3. PDF Search Application: A custom PDF search application was created to retrieve historical lab reports based on identifiers such as patient name, test name, and date. Scalesology developed a Python script to parse individual patient reports from large bulk PDF files containing thousands of records, storing them in cloud storage. An out-of-the-box search application was then optimized to quickly retrieve reports based on user search queries.


RESULT:

As a result of Scalesology's comprehensive approach, the Diagnostic Laboratory now has migrated and optimized custom applications that enable swift and accurate retrieval of billing and patient details, as well as reports. These integrated solutions have significantly reduced the time required to access critical information while providing valuable insights to support ongoing operational needs and informed decision-making.
